PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) Laser light is the newest weapon in the war against fat. Aim, zap and melt away those unwanted pounds.
52-year-old Renee Escobedo is interested because she says she can't get rid of a few trouble spots.
"My stomach, my hips, my back area, the areas that most women complain about," said Renee.
Zerona is a low level or cold laser that targets fat cells. Nothing ever touches the skin but beams of light.
"I really felt nothing at all. I didn't even feel like the laser was on me. I was waiting for it to start," said Jessica Goerig, a 28-year-old who gets treated
with the laser.
"This is really one of the first forms of non-invasive lipo sculpture," said Dr. Andrew Kwak with the Lumen Laser Center in Bryn Mawr, one of the first in the
Philadelphia area to have the Zerona laser.
"It basically opens up a small hole in the fat cell, so the oil content spills out and then just seals back up. That oil content travels throughout the body is
broken down, is burned off and basically is normally excreted," said Dr. Kwak.
"I was kind of leery, maybe a little skeptical at first. It really surprised me," said Jessica.
Zerona isn't for people who are very overweight, but better for someone like Jessica, Dr. Kwak's assistant who is already in good shape.
"I've noticed my stomach slimmed down. I used to have more of a pooch," said Jessica.
Before and after photos show results after the six, 40 minute treatments over two weeks.
Renee isn't expecting anything dramatic. She said: "Tone, tighten the skin. Lose some inches and just look fabulous."
